promoting inclusive, sustainable futures
Hi, my name is Shelley Cowan and I have Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis ( ME ) for the past 26 years.
Hi, my name is Shelley Cowan and I am an inspirational speaker and an accessibility consultant. I have Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E) for almost 30 years. I was 12 years confined to bed, unable to use my limbs, was blind and tube fed. I required the use of a wheelchair for a further decade.
During this time I experienced daily barriers due to a lack of adequate, inclusive and accessible venues, facilities (particularly toilets), transportation, travel and tourism, hospitality services, accommodation, entertainment and education. I also experienced public discrimination. This is why I am an advocate for change.
Despite my challenges, I have learned to be resilient. I live life to the fullest despite still requiring 24/7 care. I get involved with everything from drama and dancing to zip lining to indoor sky diving and rollercoasters.
I realised there was a great need in society for safe, accessible and inclusive events for adults with disabilities. This led me to set up the organisation, JustUs in 2020.
Additionally, I completed a MSc in International Business using voice assisted technology. My research findings highlighted major failings and barriers exist for wheelchair users and people with mobility related access needs within the hospitality sector globally.
I’ve set up Access Avenue as a result of my lived experience and dire research findings. The majority of venues overlook the importance of accessibility and inclusivity strategies and in doing so ignore major Purple Pound opportunities (spending power of persons with disability) currently valuing £274 billion annually in the U.K.
I feel my lived experience and research have provided me with a purpose to provide hope for others. I am passionate about improving the lives of people with disabilities and empowering them to have equal opportunities.
My dream is inclusive, sustainable futures for all.
